The Scotsman Who Saved Me by Hannah Howell
My Review:
Iain MacEnroy is head of a big family, a lot of people rely on him.
When he was very young, his family was forced to leave Scotland hoping to find fortune in America.
While on patrol in the territory around their land, Iain and his brothers discover a cabin on fire with a woman raped and murdered right along with her husband that first was, most likely, forced to watch it happen.
They also find proof they had a baby living with them.
Hoping to save at least one life, they decide to follow what they believe is his blood trail but they end up saving two people:
A young woman and a 3 years old child, her nephew.
Emily Stanton‘s sister and brother-in-law sacrificed themselves to give her and their child Neddy, a chance to escape.
Emily is a proper english lady and Neddy is heir to the title of Duke with all the money and power that comes with it.
Greed for power and title is the reason why her family was killed.
Not even an ocean can stop her uncle’s madness from being unleashed against them.
She need help but the only man around able to provide it, hates her noble English background.
“Nobility” robbed him of his parents and livelihood…how can he trust she’s different?
I didn’t hate listening to this story but I sure have a long list of things that bothered me:
- The story often moves slowly and both writing and plot didn’t blow my mind away.
- Emily trusts Iain right from the get go which I didn’t find believable given what she went through.
- Iain saying that, since English highborn people are responsible for what happened to his family, he cannot trust Emily because she’s a Lady was absurd and the issue is dragged for WAY too long.
- Iain and Emily are intimate multiple times even when Iain believes she’s not worthy of his trust for the reason I mentioned above and he’s hot one moment and cold the next. Also, they never consider the consequences of sleeping together!
I absolutely loved little Neddy and his interactions with the adults in the story.
I was interested enough to reach the HFN ending but I believe I would’ve dropped the book if I wasn’t listening to the audio version that, somehow, held my attention.
