The Promise of Jenny Jones by Maggie Osborne
Plot:
A dying mother asks Jenny Jones, a woman waiting to be executed in a mexican prison, to make a bargain.
She will be executed in her stead if Jenny Jones promises to protect her 6 years old daughter Graciela with her life and take her to northern California to be raised by her father.
Jenny had to learn how to fend for herself at 10 years old, since then, she’s done everything except selling her body and now, the only thing she truly owns is her word.
She’s not the maternal kind, she has no idea where to start with Graciela but she’ll keep her promise no matter what.
The long journey to northern California turns out more difficult than she had anticipated…
Graciela’s life is in danger and when Ty Sanders, a stubborn cowboy, crosses their path…Jenny Jones’s life is thrown upside down yet again.
Personal Thoughts:
“Honesty is all I’ve got,” she said finally, speaking in a low voice. “I don’t have family. I don’t have beauty, or a man. I don’t have money, and I sure as hell don’t have a future. All I’ve got to prop up my pride is my word.” Her chin rose. “When Jenny Jones says something, you can bet your last peso that it’s true.”
And it is true.
Jenny goes above and beyond for little Graciela that, at first, does not accept the situation.
The cousins she grew up with are trying to kill her to get her inheritance but she’s only 6 and she’s just lost her mother.
She can’t believe her family wants to harm her and blames Jenny…
“When Graciela was finally ready for bed, Jenny waited while the kid knelt and basically offered up the same prayer as she did every night. Jenny made a face during the blessing of the cousins, and she spoke the last words in unison with Graciela. “And strike Jenny dead, amen.” We don’t need to suggest ways and means, all right? We can leave the details of my demise to God. Now, go to sleep.”
She sighed when Graciela lifted her cheek for a kiss. She didn’t think she would ever get accustomed to death wishes being followed by a good-night kiss.”
Things change and they learn to accept and love each other as mother and daughter.
The author did a great job with characters and plot’s development!
I enjoyed Jenny Jones’s “evolution” and how she gradually lets her guard down with Ty.
Jenny is one of the best headstrong leading ladies I’ve met in bookland so far.
I truly LOVED this book and I’m a bit emotional right now…
“Say yes, Jenny. Promise you’ll marry me. Promise you’ll still be here, driving me crazy and loving me when we’re little and old and surrounded by grandchildren. Promise that you’ll let me love you until I take my last breath. Promise.”
