Kiss an Angel by Susan Elizabeth Phillips
Plot:
Daisy Devreaux has traveled the world accompanying her mother and she’s used to a life of comfort and riches.
She is the result of a fling between a Top Model obsessed with her own beauty and a Russian Ambassador with great ambitions that was never truly a parent to her.
When her mother dies, all the expenses for that kind of lifestyle catch up with her and, for all the uncovered chequess, she might be sent to prison.
Unless her father steps in.
Daisy’s father has always considered her a failure, too similar to her mother to actually have a brain.
He gives her two choices:
Jail or a 6 months marriage to a suitable man that will teach her what real life looks like.
I bet you can’t believe such an absurd thing is possible in this day and age…
Neither does Daisy.
Not until she finds herself beside a stranger saying “I do”.
Alex Markov suffered hardship and cruelty when he was a child and Daisy’s father was the benefactor that saved his life.
He’s content with the life he’s built for himself even if he believes those years of abuse broke something inside him and he’ll never be able to love another human being.
He reluctantly agrees to his benefactor’s plan and he doesn’t give his bride much time to adjust to her new situation.
Somehow Daisy finds herself relocated to a traveling circus because, apparently, her new husband’s home and job is with the circus!
Alex has every intention of keeping his distance but soon he realizes there’s so much more about Daisy than what meets the eye…
Personal Thoughts:
I really enjoyed the ride and, when the last page came into view, I wanted to stay with these characters a little bit longer.
I haven’t been to the circus in forever and reading about it, made me remember how much I loved it when I was a little girl.
Though, I wasn’t a big fan of animal menageries…
I completely agree with Daisy’s POV about the cruelty of keeping in captivity animals meant to roam free in their habitat.
In this story I absolutely loved how Daisy’s relationship with the animals develops!
The “little” mischievous and adorable elephant, the majestic tiger and how Daisy sees a bit of Alex in his demeanor…
All beautifully written.
And the MC…
Alex and Daisy what a pair!
To think all of it starts with:
I take thee… to be my awful wedded husband
From there you’ll experience quite the journey!
They tease and push each other and they learn to be what they really are beneath all fears, labels and circumstances they’ve faced in life.
Through each other…they find themselves.
Together they learn how things that seemed impossible to do or be are not actually impossible when you face your fears.
The book includes a pretty ridiculous/farfetched twist but it didn’t bother me
Alex being a Romanov actually explains Daisy’s father “plan” and it makes sense as part of his obsession.
The entire story isn’t strictly realistic nor is it perfect (-see triggers in the section down below-) but it worked for me.
I enjoyed both Alex and Daisy’s evolution, expecially Daisy’s.
This is another MUST READ by Susan Elizabeth Phillips!
