First Star I See Tonight by Susan Elizabeth Phillips
Plot:
Cooper Graham is Piper Dove‘s first real chance to demonstrate how remarkable her detective skills are and save her father’s struggling PI agency.
She has a big dream: Being recognized as Chicago’s best detective.
The former Chicago Stars quarterback, now a rich nightclub owner, spots her pretty quickly though and her improvisation skills?
They are not much better.
Even so, she lands herself a job at the nightclub as a supervisor of sorts to keep an eye on his staff.
In the meantime, she keeps both her eyes on him…
When Cooper’s life is threatened and he keeps refusing to hire a bodyguard, she stubbornly makes his safety her job.
Soon sparks fly and their chemistry becomes undeniable…
How will our detective handle it all?
Personal Thoughts:
A great detective needs a first rate imagination…
– “The fact is . . . I’m your stalker. Not full-out barmy. Just . . . mildly unhinged…
I assure you. I’m only a bit of a nutter,” she said breathlessly. “Absolutely harmless. You don’t have to worry about violence.”
– “Only that I have a stalker.
I don’t want to see you anywhere near me again. Got it?”
– “I’m afraid that will be impossible.” She paused. “Until my new medication kicks in.”
I absolutely ADORED Piper & Cooper’s banters.
SEP’s writing is so good I very much enjoyed this book even if it’s not her best work plotwise (I was not a fan of Piper’s sudden drama toward the end).
Some things bothered me and kept me from giving a 5 stars rating:
► How a subplot with a certain Middle Eastern’s girl, was handled.
Cooper and Piper pretend to buy a Pakistani servant girl as a sex slave…it was a problematic and unnecessary subplot to make Cooper shine as the girl’s “saviour”. As I said…unnecessary and offensive given the delicate subject.
► An intimate scene were he just randomly spanks Piper to “heat things up” but she clearly states she’s not exactly into what he’s doing.
► Piper’s reason for a breakup she didn’t really want.
That said, I loved the sharp and witty dialogues all over, the mistery that Piper (our eccentric investigator with sass) needs to solve and the sweet romance…
I’m a SEP’s addict and I can’t wait for her next release!!
